FIU Basketball Update

Florida International University’s Golden Panther men’s basketball team has gotten off to a rocky 4-11 (1-2 Sun Belt) start on their 2011-12 campaign.  Fortunately for head coach Isiah Thomas’ Golden Panthers, the rest of the Eastern Division of the Sun Belt League is not faring much better.  Their 1-2 conference record currently has them tied for second place in the division with Florida Atlantic.
Part of the reason for the Golden Panther’s struggles so far this year has been their troubles with scoring.  Their 60.5 points is a game is good for second-to-last in the conference.  Bright spots for FIU include senior Guard DeJuan Wright, who is leading the Golden Panthers in scoring with 15.9 points-per-game thanks to his outstanding 52% shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore Dominique Ferguson leads the team with 6.8 rebounds-per-game and sophomore Phil Taylor averages 4.2 assists-per-game to lead FIU in that category.
FIU has 13 conference games remaining on their regular season schedule, seven of those being home games.  Plenty is still on the line as a strong second-half of the season could put FIU in position to receive a decent seeding in the Sun Belt conference tourney.  The Golden Panthers are next in action on Thursday night at home against division-leading Middle Tennessee.  Tip-off is at 7:30 pm
